Asha Bhosle and Lata Mangeshkar: Two Sisters Who Shaped Indian Music

There was a time when almost every song playing around us was connected to two names: Asha Bhosle and Lata Mangeshkar.

After Asha Bhosle’s passing on 12 April 2026, and after the loss of Lata Mangeshkar in 2022, people are looking back at their journey again. 

About The Two Sisters

Music was part of their daily life from the beginning. Their father, Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar, was a classical singer. After his death, both sisters had to start working at a young age. Singing became a way to support the family, and this is how they entered films.

Lata Mangeshkar started getting recognition earlier. By the late 1940s, her voice was heard in films and on the radio. Over time, she became one of the most heard singers in the country.

Asha Bhosle started later. In the beginning, she did not get the same kind of opportunities. She continued working and slowly created her own place.
