Why Did Amitabh, Jaya, and Rekha Agree To Do Silsila? Here’s What Really Happened

The making of Silsila is one of the most talked-about stories in Hindi cinema because it blurred the line between real life and reel life. While many details have been confirmed by those involved, others remain based on industry accounts and long-standing speculation. Here’s what is known.

The film was not originally planned with Amitabh, Jaya and Rekha. Yes, you read it right. Yash Chopra did not initially cast Jaya Bachchan and Rekha together.

The original cast reportedly included Amitabh Bachchan, Parveen Babi as Chandni and Smita Patil (after Padmini Kolhapure couldn’t do the film) as Shobha.

Shooting preparations had even begun with this casting in mind. Then Amitabh suggested changing the cast.

According to Yash Chopra himself, in later interviews, he met Amitabh during the shooting of Kaalia in Kashmir, and Amitabh narrated the script. Amitabh reportedly asked him whether he was completely satisfied with the casting.

Yash Chopra admitted that his dream cast would actually be Amitabh Bachchan, Rekha, and Jaya Bachchan. But he believed it would never be possible because of their shared history. Amitabh then reportedly suggested that they at least try.

Why did Yash Chopra want this casting?

Yash Chopra believed that since the story itself revolved around a married man caught between his wife and his former lover, having actors whose real-life equation was constantly discussed would bring an added emotional layer. Whether he intended to use the public curiosity as publicity is something only he truly knew. But there’s no doubt that the casting instantly became one of the biggest talking points even before the film was released.

Years later, Yash Chopra admitted that making the film with this cast was a huge risk.

Did Rekha agree immediately?

By most accounts, yes. Rekha reportedly had no objection to playing Chandni. She has also spoken positively about the film over the years and considered it one of her important performances.

Why did Jaya Bachchan agree?

This remains the biggest mystery because Jaya has rarely spoken publicly about the decision.

Several theories exist:

1. Professionalism: She was an accomplished actress and may simply have accepted a strong role.

2. Trust in Amitabh: She may have believed their personal life should remain separate from work.

3. Faith in Yash Chopra: She had previously worked with him and respected him as a filmmaker.

There has never been an official statement from Jaya saying exactly why she accepted the role, so any explanation beyond these possibilities would be speculation.

Was there tension on set?

Yash Chopra later recalled that he was extremely nervous before filming. He reportedly met both Jaya and Rekha separately to ensure they were comfortable.

According to him, once shooting began, all three actors behaved professionally and completed the film without creating problems.

He said he was actually surprised at how smoothly everything went.

Did the real-life affair influence the film?

This is where fact and speculation overlap.

For decades, there have been reports of a relationship between Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha. Neither Amitabh nor Jaya has publicly confirmed such a relationship.

Rekha has made comments over the years that many interpreted as acknowledging deep feelings, but there has never been an official confirmation from all parties.

Because of this, audiences naturally connected Silsila with their real lives. Scenes involving Amitabh, Rekha and Jaya felt unusually authentic to many viewers, which is one reason the film has remained culturally significant.

Ironically, the film wasn’t a major success initially. Despite all the curiosity, Silsila underperformed at the box office when it was released in 1981.

Over the years, however, it gained cult status. Today, many viewers consider it one of Yash Chopra’s most memorable romantic dramas, not only because of its story but because the casting itself became part of Hindi cinema history.

In many ways, Silsila happened because three things came together. Yash Chopra had a story about love, marriage and infidelity. Amitabh Bachchan encouraged him to cast the actors he truly wanted. Jaya Bachchan and Rekha agreed to work together despite the intense public attention surrounding their personal lives.

That combination created a film that is still discussed decades later.
