Why Awarapan Is Returning to Cinemas Before Awarapan 2 — All You Need to Know About the Re-Release
Nearly 19 years after its original release, Awarapan is returning to theatres on July 31, 2026, just two weeks before the release of Awarapan 2, which arrives in cinemas on August 14, 2026. While re-releases have become common over the last few years, bringing back Awarapan appears to be part of a larger plan to reconnect audiences with the story before its sequel continues the journey.
Interestingly, the film’s return to theatres also means it will face competition from Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which releases in India on July 30. Despite the clash, the makers seem confident that Awarapan still has an audience that would like to experience the film on the big screen once again.
A film that found its audience after its theatrical run
Directed by Mohit Suri and produced by Mukesh Bhatt under Vishesh Films, Awarapan released on June 29, 2007.
The film starred Emraan Hashmi, Shriya Saran, Mrinalini Sharma, Ashutosh Rana and Ashish Vidyarthi.
At the time of its release, the film received mixed box office results. According to publicly available trade reports, it collected around ₹6–7 crore nett in India, while its worldwide gross was reported to be around ₹12 crore against a production budget estimated at ₹18 crore. It was not considered a commercial success during its theatrical run.
However, the film gradually built a following through television screenings, DVDs and later on streaming platforms. Over the years, many viewers began revisiting the film, especially because of its music and Emraan Hashmi’s performance.
What was Awarapan about?
The story follows Shivam Pandit, played by Emraan Hashmi, who works for crime boss Malik, portrayed by Ashutosh Rana.
Shivam is asked to keep an eye on Reema (Shriya Saran), the woman Malik suspects of being unfaithful. As he spends time with her, Shivam learns about her past and eventually decides to help her escape from the life she has been forced into.
The film then follows Shivam as he tries to protect Reema while confronting Malik and his criminal network. The story combines action with themes of redemption, sacrifice and second chances.
The film was officially adapted from the South Korean movie A Bittersweet Life (2005), while also drawing inspiration from the Pakistani film Mujhe Jeene Do.
The music became one of the film’s biggest strengths
Even people who haven’t watched Awarapan are familiar with its soundtrack.
Composed by Pritam, the album featured songs including “Toh Phir Aao,” “Tera Mera Rishta,” “Maula Maula,” “Juda Hoke Bhi” and “Mahiya.” Several tracks continue to be streamed years after the film’s release and remain closely associated with Emraan Hashmi’s filmography.
Why is the re-release important?
The return of Awarapan gives audiences a chance to revisit Shivam’s story before the sequel arrives.
Over the last few years, several older films have performed well during their re-releases, showing that audiences are willing to return to theatres for films they missed earlier or want to experience again on the big screen.
For the makers, the timing also helps introduce the original film to younger viewers who may not have watched it when it first released in 2007.
What to expect from Awarapan 2
Awarapan 2 is scheduled to release on August 14, 2026. The film is directed by Nitin Kakkar and produced by Vishesh Bhatt, with Emraan Hashmi returning as Shivam. Disha Patani joins the cast in a leading role.
While the makers have not revealed many story details, the sequel is expected to continue Shivam’s journey nearly two decades after the first film.
Whether the re-release translates into strong footfalls remains to be seen, but it gives audiences an opportunity to revisit a film that found a much larger audience after its original theatrical run.
