Sunny Deol’s Batwara 1947 Gets ‘A’ Certificate From CBFC, Runtime Revealed

Sunny Deol’s upcoming period drama Batwara 1947 has received an ‘A’ certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The certificate was issued on July 23, 2026, with the film receiving an adults-only rating.

According to the CBFC details, the film has a runtime of 145.34 minutes, which is approximately 2 hours, 25 minutes and 34 seconds.

The ‘A’ certificate is an interesting development for a Sunny Deol film. Since 2000, only a handful of his films have received an adults-only certificate, including Champion, Farz, Karz: The Burden Of Truth, Jaani Dushman: Ek Anokhi Kahani, Mohalla Assi and Chup.

A Story Set During Partition

Earlier titled Lahore 1947, the film was later renamed Batwara 1947. The story is set during the Partition of India and is based on the play Jis Lahore Nai Dekhya, written by Asghar Wajahat.

The film follows a Muslim family that moves from Lucknow to Lahore after Partition and is given a haveli that was left behind by a Hindu family. However, the elderly Hindu woman who lives there refuses to leave her ancestral home. The story then explores the relationship that develops between her and the Muslim family.

The film looks at Partition through the people caught in the middle of it, focusing on displacement, loss and humanity.

Sunny Deol, Rajkumar Santoshi and Aamir Khan Come Together

Batwara 1947 brings Sunny Deol and director Rajkumar Santoshi together again. The two have previously worked on films such as Ghayal, Damini and Ghatak.

The film is produced by Aamir Khan under Aamir Khan Productions, along with Aparna Purohit. Rajkumar Santoshi has directed and co-written the film, with Asghar Wajahat credited as the source of the story. A. R. Rahman has composed the music.

The cast includes Sunny Deol, Preity Zinta, Shabana Azmi, Ali Fazal and Karan Deol. Aamir Khan is also reportedly part of the film in a supporting role, while Vicky Kaushal and Mithun Chakraborty are also listed among the cast.

Sunny Deol’s Next Big Screen Release

The film follows Sunny Deol’s recent OTT courtroom drama Ikka and marks his next major theatrical release. It also comes after the actor’s successful return to the big screen with Gadar 2 and his appearance in Border 2.
