Bollywood Films That Never Got Released Despite Completion Or Announcement 

Not all Bollywood films announced to the public make it to theatres. Over the years a number of films have been completed, partially shot or officially announced but never released. Some projects were delayed due to financial problems and others were stopped due to legal disputes, production problems or the death of essential members of the team.

Here are some well-known Bollywood films that never saw an official release.

Shoebite (2008)

Directed by Shoojit Sircar, Shoebite starred Amitabh Bachchan, Sarika, Dia Mirza and Jimmy Sheirgill. The film was completed, but a legal dispute between Percept Picture Company and UTV over distribution rights stopped its release. Despite several discussions over the years, the film has never reached audiences.

Time Machine

Directed by Shekhar Kapur, Time Machine starred Aamir Khan, Raveena Tandon, Naseeruddin Shah, Rekha and Vijay Anand. Inspired by H.G. Wells’ novel The Time Machine, the science-fiction film was partially shot in the early 1990s before production stopped because of financial issues.

Dus (1997)

Dus was directed by Mukul Anand and featured Salman Khan, Sanjay Dutt, Raveena Tandon and Shilpa Shetty. The film was left incomplete after Mukul Anand passed away during production. While the film was never released, its soundtrack became popular.

Munna Bhai Chale America

Planned as the third film in the Munna Bhai series, the project reunited Sanjay Dutt, Arshad Warsi, director Rajkumar Hirani and producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra. A teaser was also released, but the film was later shelved due to Sanjay Dutt’s legal issues and changes in the script.

Libaas (1988)

Directed by Gulzar, Libaas starred Shabana Azmi, Naseeruddin Shah and Raj Babbar. Although the film was completed, it was never released in India. Reports suggested that its subject about relationships and marriage led to issues with its release.

Sarfarosh (1979)

This film, directed by Manmohan Desai, starred Amitabh Bachchan, Parveen Babi, Kader Khan and Shakti Kapoor. Production began, but the project was eventually abandoned and never completed.

Apna Paraya

Directed by Basu Chatterjee, this film starred Utpal Dutt, Shabana Azmi and Bhavna Bhatt. It was completed but never received a theatrical release.

Zamaanat

Zamaanat, directed by S. Ramanathan, featured Amitabh Bachchan, Arshad Warsi, Karisma Kapoor and Vijayashanti. The film faced repeated delays for years because of financial and production issues. Although it was completed, it has still not been released.

Talisman

Director Subhash Ghai announced Talisman with Amitabh Bachchan in the lead. The film was planned as a fantasy adventure, but production never moved forward and the project was shelved.

Power

Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, Power featured Amitabh Bachchan, Ajay Devgn, Sanjay Dutt, Anil Kapoor, Kangana Ranaut and Amisha Patel. The film was announced and shooting had started, but production stopped because of financial issues and scheduling problems.

Bollywood has seen many films disappear before reaching audiences. Some projects are not finished, others are completed but locked away because of legal disputes, financial problems or production difficulties. These unmade films still fascinate many film buffs today, and they wonder what might have been.
