Lara Dutta’s journey didn’t begin on a film set. It began on a global stage, when she won the Miss Universe 2000 and brought the crown to India. That moment made people notice her, but it was only the start of everything that followed.

After that, she moved towards films. It was not instant. She took her time, understood how the industry works, and slowly started building her space, one project at a time.

Early Life and Background

Lara Dutta was born on 16 April 1978 in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. Her father was an Air Force officer and her mother came from an Anglo-Indian family. She spent her early years in different cities and later completed her studies in Bengaluru. She graduated from the University of Mumbai.

Her journey started with modelling. She won Miss Intercontinental in 1997. In 2000, she won Miss India and then Miss Universe, she was the second Indian woman to win the title.

Entry into Bollywood and Early Success

After winning the pageant, Lara Dutta moved into Bollywood. She started her acting career with Andaaz in 2003. The film worked at the box office and she received the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut.

After that, she became a regular face in films. She worked in movies like Masti, No Entry, Bhagam Bhag, Partner, and Housefull. These were the films that were widely appreciated. 

Challenges and Career Phases

Her journey was not smooth. Some films did not work, and in some projects, her roles were not very strong. Still, she continued working and tried different kinds of roles instead of stopping.

In 2011, she took a step ahead and became a producer with Chalo Dilli. Around the same time, she decided to slow down and take a break from films to focus on her personal life.

Comeback and Recent Work

Lara Dutta returned with new roles in recent years. In 2021, she played former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in Bell Bottom. Her performance was noticed even though the film did not do well.

She also worked on web series such as Hundred, Kaun Banegi Shikharwati, and Ranneeti: Balakot & Beyond. In these projects, she took on different types of roles compared to her earlier film work.

Lara Dutta is married to tennis player Mahesh Bhupathi. They got married in 2011 and have a daughter. She has often spoken about balancing work and family.
