Made In India: Alisha Chinai recalls the song that sparked a video revolution
Alisha Chinai describes Made In India as a turning point in Indian pop, noting its release came at a moment when music videos were still a novelty. She began her singing career with Adventures Of Tarzan (1985), and Made In India helped make her a household name. The track’s video, featuring Chinai with Milind Soman, arrived at a time when videos were just starting to gain traction in India.
Chinai recalls hearing observers say the track might fail. “Whoever heard the song said, ‘Either it’ll work or it’ll flop’,” she is quoted as saying. She also credits the accompanying video with starting a revolution: “That video caused a REVOLUTION… audience saw the singer singing the song.”
She added that the release of the video amplified its impact. “MTV also just came in and the whole pop revolution began as a result,” she noted. She also reflected on her initial uncertainty about the song’s success, saying, “I didn’t expect it would become a sensation. However, my gut instinct told me that this song was going to be very special. There’s something about this song; it’s special.”
