From Small Towns and TV Shows to Bollywood: Actors Who Built Their Careers Step by Step

Every year, thousands of people come to Mumbai hoping to work in films. Some find opportunities quickly, while many spend years giving auditions, doing small roles or working in television before getting noticed.

Several well-known actors in Bollywood have followed that journey. They did not come from film families, nor did they become stars overnight. They started with small roles, television shows or theatre, and gradually built their careers.

Here are a few actors whose journey to Bollywood has been anything but easy.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui

Born in Budhana, Uttar Pradesh, Nawazuddin Siddiqui moved to Mumbai with the dream of becoming an actor. Before films, he worked in theatre and even took up different jobs to support himself.

For nearly 18 years, he appeared in small parts that many viewers didn’t even notice. He had brief appearances in films like Sarfarosh, Shool, Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. and Black Friday before finally getting recognition.

His career changed after Gangs of Wasseypur, followed by films such as The Lunchbox, Badlapur, Raman Raghav 2.0, Manto and the web series Sacred Games.

Pankaj Tripathi

Pankaj Tripathi comes from Belsand village in Bihar. Before becoming an actor, he was active in theatre and later studied at the National School of Drama.

His early years in Mumbai were filled with small appearances. One of his first film roles was a brief scene in Run.

Things changed after Gangs of Wasseypur, where his performance was noticed. Since then, he has appeared in films and series like Newton, Stree, Mimi, OMG 2, Mirzapur and Criminal Justice.

Ayushmann Khurrana

Before entering films, Ayushmann Khurrana was already a familiar face on television.

He won MTV Roadies Season 2, worked as a radio jockey, hosted television shows and interviewed celebrities for several years before making his Bollywood debut.

His first film, Vicky Donor (2012), became a success and introduced audiences to a different kind of mainstream cinema. He later starred in Andhadhun, Badhaai Ho, Article 15, Dream Girl, Bala and Doctor G.

Vikrant Massey

Vikrant Massey began his career on television with shows like Dhoom Machaao Dhoom, Balika Vadhu and Qubool Hai.

After spending several years on TV, he slowly moved into films with supporting roles before becoming a lead actor.

His performances in A Death in the Gunj, Haseen Dillruba, Love Hostel and 12th Fail brought him wider recognition. 12th Fail became one of the most talked-about Hindi films of 2023 and introduced Vikrant to an even larger audience.

Irrfan Khan

Before becoming one of India’s most recognised actors internationally, Irrfan Khan also spent years looking for meaningful work.

After graduating from the National School of Drama, he worked in television and appeared in a small role in Salaam Bombay! His scenes were reportedly reduced in the final cut.

Over the years, he built a career through films like Maqbool, The Namesake, Paan Singh Tomar, The Lunchbox, Hindi Medium, Life of Pi, Jurassic World and Inferno.

He became one of the few Indian actors to work successfully in both Bollywood and international cinema.

Every journey is different

The careers of these actors show that there is no single path to success in the film industry. Some came from small towns, some worked on television, while others spent years doing roles that lasted only a few minutes.
