The Real Story Behind Talaash: How One Late-Night Incident Inspired Aamir Khan’s Mystery Film

Released in 2012, Talaash is one of those Hindi films that people still talk about years later. At first, it looks like a murder mystery. But as the story moves forward, it slowly becomes a film about grief, loss and moving on.

Directed by Reema Kagti and written by Reema Kagti and Zoya Akhtar, the film starred Aamir Khan, Rani Mukerji and Kareena Kapoor Khan. It was produced by Excel Entertainment and Aamir Khan Productions.

The idea came from a real incident

One of the most interesting facts about Talaash is how the story began.

According to Aamir Khan, the supernatural element in the film was inspired by something that happened to Zoya Akhtar. She was driving with a few friends near Haji Ali in Mumbai late at night when they felt their car had hit a woman. Everyone got down to check, but there was nobody on the road.

The incident stayed with her for a long time. Later, while working on Talaash, that experience became the starting point for the film’s central idea.

More than just a murder mystery

In the film, Inspector Surjan Singh Shekhawat, played by Aamir Khan, is investigating the death of actor Armaan Kapoor, whose car falls into the sea under mysterious circumstances.

At the same time, Surjan is struggling with a personal loss. The death of his young son has created distance between him and his wife Roshni, played by Rani Mukerji.

During the investigation, he meets Rosie, played by Kareena Kapoor Khan. As the story unfolds, Rosie becomes an important part of the mystery.

While the film follows a crime investigation, it also talks about guilt, grief and accepting the past.

Aamir Khan wasn’t the first choice

Many people may not know that Aamir Khan wasn’t the first actor approached for the role.

According to reports, the script was first offered to Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Saif Ali Khan. After they did not take up the project, Aamir Khan came on board and eventually played Inspector Surjan Shekhawat.

He learned swimming for the film

Several scenes in Talaash were shot underwater.

Aamir Khan reportedly trained for nearly four months to learn swimming before filming these sequences, as he did not know how to swim earlier.

A small detail many viewers missed

Actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui appeared in the film as Tehmur.

His character walks with a limp. According to the makers, this was a reference to the historical ruler Timur, who was also known for walking with a limp.

The film worked at the box office

Talaash was made on an estimated budget of around ₹40–50 crore.

The film went on to collect more than ₹170 crore worldwide, making it one of the successful Hindi releases of 2012. It also performed well in overseas markets.

Songs that are still remembered

The music, composed by Ram Sampath, became another reason people connected with the film.

Songs like Jee Le Zaraa, Muskaanein Jhooti Hai and Jiya Laage Na continue to be part of playlists even today. Along with the songs, the film’s background score also helped build the mystery without revealing too much.

Why do people still talk about Talaash?

Over the years, Talaash has found a new audience through television and OTT platforms. Many viewers revisit the film because its story offers more than a typical thriller.

Instead of ending with just the identity of a killer, the film focuses on how people deal with loss and find a way to move forward. That emotional layer, along with its mystery, is one of the reasons Talaash continues to be remembered even after more than a decade.
