Tumbbad 2: Alia Bhatt Joins Sohum Shah, Release Date Announced

The world of Tumbbad is set to return to cinemas with a new chapter. The makers have announced that Alia Bhatt has joined the cast of Tumbbad 2, where she will share screen space with Sohum Shah and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. The film is scheduled to release in theatres on December 3, 2027.

The sequel will be directed by Adesh Prasad and produced by Sohum Shah Films in association with Pen Studios.

Talking about joining the film, Alia Bhatt said she has admired Tumbbad since she first watched it. She shared that the film created a world that stayed with audiences even years after its release. She also said she is looking forward to working with Sohum Shah and Nawazuddin Siddiqui for the first time and is excited to be part of the story.

Actor and producer Sohum Shah, who played the lead role in the first film, welcomed Alia to the project. He said he has followed her work since her debut and is looking forward to collaborating with her.

Dr. Jayantilal Gada of Pen Studios also spoke about the announcement. He said this marks Pen Studios’ third collaboration with Alia Bhatt after Gangubai Kathiawadi and RRR.

About Tumbbad

Released on October 12, 2018, Tumbbad was directed by Rahi Anil Barve, with Anand Gandhi and Adesh Prasad also receiving directorial credits. The film was produced by Sohum Shah, Aanand L. Rai, Mukesh Shah and Amita Shah.

The film starred Sohum Shah, Mohammad Samad, Jyoti Malshe, Anita Date-Kelkar and Ronjini Chakraborty.

Set in the village of Tumbbad in Maharashtra during the British Raj, the story follows Vinayak Rao, a man obsessed with finding a hidden treasure linked to the forgotten deity Hastar. As he continues searching for gold across different stages of his life, the film explores how greed passes from one generation to another.

Unlike many horror films, Tumbbad combined Indian mythology, folklore and fantasy with a period setting. Much of the film was shot in real locations across Maharashtra, and production took several years because the makers waited for the right weather conditions to capture the film’s visual tone.

Box Office Journey

Tumbbad had a modest theatrical run when it was first released in 2018. According to publicly available box office data, the film earned around Rs 13–15 crore worldwide during its original release against a reported production budget of around Rs 15 crore.

Over the years, the film built a strong following through streaming platforms and word of mouth.

In 2024, Tumbbad returned to theatres with a re-release. The film received a much bigger response than its original release and collected over Rs 38 crore worldwide, making it one of the highest-grossing re-released Indian films. The renewed popularity also led the makers to officially announce Tumbbad 2.

What’s Next

With Sohum Shah returning, Nawazuddin Siddiqui joining the franchise and Alia Bhatt now becoming part of the cast, Tumbbad 2 will continue the story that began with the first film. While the makers have not revealed plot details yet, the sequel is expected to expand the world introduced in the 2018 film.

Tumbbad 2 is scheduled to release in cinemas on December 3, 2027.
