One such artist is Brahmanandam, who is widely regarded as one of the most popular comedians in Indian cinema. Early life
Brahmanandam was born on February 1, 1956, into a humble family in the Sattenapalli region of Andhra Pradesh. His full name is Kanneganti Brahmanandam. His father, Nagalingachari, was a carpenter, and he was one of eight children in the family. Despite their middling financial background, Brahmanandam worked hard to complete his education with a Master of Arts degree.
After his studies, he began working as a Telugu language lecturer in Attili, located in the West Godavari, Andhra Pradesh. Yet, his passion for acting and the arts dated back to his childhood. Alongside his teaching duties at the college, he actively participated in theatre and performed mimicry act shows. Gradually, his mimicry performances began to gain popularity among the public.
Career
In 1985, he received an opportunity to appear on the Doordarshan Telugu show ‘Pakapakalu’. His performance on this show was highly appreciated by the audience. It was after this show that the renowned director Jandhyala offered him a role in his film, ‘Aha Naa Pellanta!’ in 1987, this film was a turning point in Brahmanandam’s career.
From that moment on, there was no looking back. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, he consistently appeared in a line of successful films. Audiences widely acclaimed his comedic performances in movies such as ‘Jagadeka Veerudu Atiloka Sundari’, ‘Bobbili Raja‘, ‘Kshana Kshanam’ and ‘Rowdy Alludu’. In the 1993 film ‘Money’, he portrayed the character of Khan Dada, a role that became extremely popular. He even received a Nandi Award for this very performance. Later, a sequel to this film, titled ‘Money Money’, was produced, in which he reprised the exact character.
Over time, Brahmanandam became a name in Telugu cinema whose mere presence in a film was considered a guarantee of entertainment. Alongside comedy, he also took on several serious roles. His acting was widely acclaimed in films such as ‘Manmadhudu’, ‘Dhee’, ‘Ready’ and ‘Race Gurram’.
Throughout his long career, Brahmanandam has appeared in over a thousand films. He holds a ‘Guinness World Record’ for being the living actor credited with the most film appearances about 1000 plus films.
Awards
In acknowledgement, the Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri in 2009. He has additionally received numerous Nandi Awards, Filmfare Awards, and many more.
Personal Life
Regarding his personal life, Brahmanandam is married to Lakshmi, the couple has two sons, Raja Goutham, who has also worked in films. Apart from acting, Brahmanandam has a passion for sketching and sculpting. In his leisure time, he also enjoys reading books by philosophers: Swami Vivekananda and Jiddu Krishnamurti.
